Optical character recognition (OCR) turns a scanned page into text. That is useful, but text is not data. An invoice read by OCR is still a wall of characters until something decides which number is the total, which date is the due date and which line items belong together.
What intelligent document processing adds
Intelligent document processing (IDP) wraps OCR with layers that make the output usable:
- Classification so a mixed upload is split into invoices, statements and IDs.
- Field and table extraction that reads layouts it has never seen, without templates.
- Validation against your rules, your master data and the other documents in the same file.
- Human review only where the model is unsure, so people check exceptions instead of every page.
- Delivery of structured data to your ERP, loan system or database through an API or webhook.
When plain OCR is enough
If you only need searchable PDFs, OCR is fine. The moment someone has to retype values into another system, you are paying for the gap that IDP closes.
How to start
Pick one document type with real volume, run it on a sample of your own files and measure how many fields come back correct without a human touching them. That single number tells you more than any brochure.
